How the Scam Works
Scenario 1: The Phone Call
- You receive a call from "Microsoft" or "Windows Support"
- They claim your computer is infected or sending errors
- They ask you to let them connect remotely
- They show you "proof" of infection (normal system files)
- They demand payment to "fix" the problem
Scenario 2: The Popup
- A scary popup appears saying your computer is infected
- It displays a phone number to call urgently
- The popup may lock your browser
- When you call, same scam as above

Microsoft, Apple, and other tech companies will NEVER call you unsolicited about computer problems. They don't monitor your computer and don't know if you have a virus.
What to Do If You're a Victim
If You Gave Remote Access
- Disconnect from the Internet immediately
- Run a full antivirus scan
- Change all your passwords from another device
- Monitor your bank accounts
- Consider professional help to clean your computer
If You Paid
- Contact your bank immediately
- If paid by credit card — Request a chargeback
- If paid by gift cards — Contact the gift card company
- File a police report
How to Close a Fake Popup
- Don't call the number
- Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and open Task Manager
- Close your browser from Task Manager
- If that doesn't work, hold the power button to shut down
